Food Sensitivities: Why Food Is Often Only Part of the Picture

Food sensitivity testing is included within both the Comprehensive Wellness Scan and the Children’s Wellness Scan.

Over time, I made the decision to remove food sensitivities as a standalone scan because I rarely see food as the only issue. More often, food sensitivities are connected to deeper stress patterns within the body, including digestion, gut health, stress, toxins, nervous system overload, and overall body balance.

Allergies vs Food Sensitivities

Food allergies and food sensitivities are not the same thing.

Allergies

Allergies are immune-based reactions that often happen quickly, sometimes within minutes. Symptoms can include swelling, hives, breathing difficulties, or severe reactions.

Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are often more subtle and delayed. Symptoms may appear hours later and can look very different from person to person. Common signs may include:

→ bloating
→ constipation or diarrhea
→ headaches
→ fatigue
→ brain fog
→ skin flare-ups
→ sinus congestion
→ joint discomfort
→ mood changes

Unlike allergies, sensitivities are not always permanent and can shift as the body heals and rebalances.

Why Foods May Show Up on a Wellness Scan

One of the biggest things I explain to clients is this: Sometimes the food itself is not the true root issue. In bioenergetic wellness scans, foods may appear because the body is struggling to tolerate them right now due to other stressors happening underneath the surface. Things I commonly see connected with food sensitivities include:

→ digestive stress
→ gut imbalance
→ low stomach acid
→ low digestive enzymes
→ nervous system stress
→ parasites or candida patterns
→ toxin or mold exposure
→ histamine overload
→ liver and drainage stress

This is why I prefer to look at the body as a whole rather than focusing only on eliminating foods.

Common Food Sensitivities I See

Some foods tend to show up more often than others, sometimes called the “Sensitive 10.” These commonly include:

→ gluten and wheat
→ dairy
→ eggs
→ soy
→ corn
→ peanuts
→ sugar
→ alcohol
→ nightshades

This does not automatically mean these foods are “bad.” Sometimes they are simply giving us information about what may be happening in the body.

For example:

→ dairy may relate to lactose digestion or gut stress
→ peanuts and corn may connect with mold or mycotoxin exposure
→ coffee can sometimes contribute to nervous system stress
→ nightshades may aggravate inflammation or joint discomfort in sensitive individuals

Why Elimination Diets Don’t Always Work

Many people remove more and more foods but still don’t feel better. That’s because food sensitivities are often connected to:

→ stress
→ gut inflammation
→ poor digestion
→ toxins
→ nervous system dysregulation
→ microbial imbalance

If the body is overwhelmed, foods may simply become harder to tolerate. This is one reason I focus heavily on supporting digestion and gut health alongside food awareness.

The 5R Gut Health Framework

When supporting food sensitivities, I often encourage clients to think about gut health foundations first.

A simple framework commonly used is the 5Rs:

REMOVE

Reduce foods and lifestyle factors that may be irritating the gut, including highly processed foods, excess sugar, alcohol, and inflammatory triggers.

REPLACE

Support digestion with proper chewing, mindful eating, digestive enzymes, bitters, lemon water, or stomach acid support where needed.

REINOCULATE

Support healthy gut bacteria with probiotic and fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and fibre-rich foods that nourish the microbiome.

REPAIR

Focus on nutrients and foods that support the gut lining, such as bone broth, collagen, zinc, glutamine, and anti-inflammatory whole foods.

REBALANCE

Support the nervous system and overall lifestyle through stress management, hydration, sleep, movement, and creating a more balanced daily rhythm.

My Overall Approach

I don’t believe healing should revolve around fear or endlessly removing foods. Instead, I believe food sensitivities can act as clues that help us better understand what may be happening inside the body.

Sometimes the goal isn’t perfection.
Sometimes it’s simply creating enough support for the body to become more resilient again.
